Here is reason 2, as promised: November first is All Saints' Day (La Toussaint) while November 2 is Jour des Morts. Both these dates are holidays that have been imposed or established by the all-powerful Catholic Church. The irony of this - or the magic, I should say - is that, through syncretism, Bawon Sanmdi and the Gedes have mastermindly managed to recuperate their cultural, historical, and mystical place in the Haitian society on these days. But is it really on these two days of November they manifest themselves to celebrations and rituals with the humans? Moreover, this is really the weirdest of observations when one gets to ask par quelle tour de passe-passe à travers le temps et l'espace that a Christian and Catholic holiday would become a Vodou celebration? Ah, l'histoire! l'histoire! A people without the knowledge of its history is like a tree without roots! Marcus Garvey pa t bay manti! (Reply)
Re: Haiti Closing Two Days Of Vodou Celebrations With No Incidentby mireille J Laborde, replying to Boni Deguay on 03-Nov-10 06:58 PMunder the Haitian Penal Code, zombification is a crime equivalent to first degree murder, punishable with life imprisonment. Yet, this same law attributes the practice of zombification to the doings of Voodoo, raising the specter of Satan, Dispater, Lucifer along with images of Baka, Loup Garou, Baron Samedi, Gede Nibo and other notorious icons of the Underworld, as the behind-the-scene operatives, if not the masters, of that organization. What, then, are we supposed to make of Voodoo? A religious organization dedicated to the good of humanity, or a congregation of Luciferians who are up to no good? Just asking! (Reply)

To mireille: I unfortunately don't. But I could share a few words and thoughts with the intent to shedding some light or pointing to some direction. It is already a great asset for the Haitian Justice system to have it under the Penal Code that zombification is a crime equivalent to first degree murder, punishable with life imprisonment. This, we knew. The zombi makers also know this and this is why they operate in such obstinate secrecy about their zombifying acts and deeds. The part many of us may be unaware of is where you it says: "... raising the specter of Satan, Dispater, Lucifer along with images of Baka, Loup Garou, Baron Samedi, Gede Nibo and other notorious icons of the Underworld, as the behind-the-scene operatives, if not the masters, of that organization." What "organization" are you referring to exactly? The underworld? Why did you capitalize this word? (I notice you didn't do so for your name.) Typo? You tell me. " keep in mind the religious aspect is only one of the many components of a particular philosophy or way of life called Vodou. For the rest, and speaking for myself, I don't think it is possible to conciliate luciferian rituals and doctrine with Vodou principles... Just answering! (Reply)

This rather reads as a good collection of clichés for the following reasons: What appears to be their reserve or modesty is instead a careful and intelligent reaction to avoid persecution and death (let's not forget the several "rejete" campaign in our recent past and the arbitrary killings of known or supposed Vodou initiates and servants every time there is a political crisis in Haiti. It has been repeatedly reported that, on and after 7 Fevrier 1986, around 10, 000 supposed manbo and houngan were slaughtered under the pretense that they were either macoutes or associated with the diabolical rites and practices of the Duvalier regime. 2 (coming up) (Reply)
