When the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake shook Port-au-Prince, Haiti, American college student Britney Gengel was among the lives lost in the rubble.
The 19-year-old was visiting Haiti with a youth group, volunteering at an orphanage. Just hours before the earthquake hit, WHDH reports Britney sent a text message that read "I want to come back here and start my own orphanage." In her memory, WHDH reports her parents now plan to carry out their daughter's wish, building an orphanage for Haitian children. The family has established the 'Be Like Brit' foundation, named after their daughter. On a recent trip to Haiti, the Gengels acquired land for the orphanage, which will be built in Guan Goave. "Call it serendipitous. Call it providential. Call it divine intervention. But, we're finishing what our daughter started," said Len Gengel. The Gengels hope to begin construction of the facility, which will house 33 boys and 33 girls, in December. Supporters can contribute by making a donation to 'Be Like Brit'.
